Aspects of teeth such as width, colour, length, shape are important factors in smile designing. Wearing and discolouration of teeth as one ages, makes your smile look dull and lifeless. Smile designing preps up your smile providing a more youthful appearance. Smile designing is not about one or two teeth but the teeth that affect your smile.

Teeth Alignment and Spacing
Procedures such Invisalign or fixed orthodontic braces can help move the teeth that are crooked, overcrowded or have gaps between them, to the desired position. Porcelain veneers and teeth bonding materials provide a faster alternative.
Missing Teeth
Teeth that have been lost or extracted results in gaps that negatively affects your smile. These missing teeth are replaced with dental implants or fixed bridges.
Smile Contouring
Teeth that are chipped or broken can be fixed with highly aesthetic restorative materials. Discrepancy in length and angulation of teeth can be altered with restorative materials or veneers. The smile contouring is done to achieve a smile curve that is proportionate on either side and follows the curve of the lower lip. The length of teeth that is exposed when smiling is also an important factor in smile designing.
Gummy Smile
When there is too much gums visible in proportion to teeth when smiling, it is called a gummy smile. Gummy smile is unattractive even with well aligned teeth. The common cause of gummy smile is the upwardly positioned upper lip when smiling. When the lip moves very high too much of gums gets exposed causing a gummy smile. Sometimes there may be excess gums that cover the teeth causing the teeth to look short, producing a gummy smile.
Smile designing will help create correct proportions of gum to teeth when smiling. This can be done via lip repositioning or gum contouring.
The upper lip can be repositioned to a lower level when smiling through a small surgical procedure. Excess gums can be removed surgically to expose the correct amount of tooth surface.
