Implant Supported Overdentures

An overdenture is a removable denture option. Implant supported dentures are preferred because they are a more stable replacement option than traditional dentures. Unlike regular dentures, which may slip out of place because they only rest on the gums without any support, here the denture is fixed to 4 or more implants placed in the jaw bone. This prevents the dentures from slipping. Implant supported dentures are more comfortable and better for communication and chewing unlike traditional dentures.

Implant supported dentures are of two types based on their attachment methods – ball retained and bar retained. Ball retained dentures are secured by ‘ball and socket’ joint attachments in each individual implant and the denture base. A bar retained denture uses attachments connected to a bar fixed to the dental implants This bar is held in place by between 2 and 5 implants, requiring fewer implants overall than ball-retained dentures do.

This is a removable appliance that can be removed at night to clean. You should not notice any difference during the day. The fact that it can be removed is an advantage because it allows you to clean underneath it.
